Diarrhea in Crohn's

Fri, August 24, 2018 9:45 PM

Hi
My wife has been on Humira for a few months.
For the past few weeks she has constant diarrhea. (More precisely, many almost liquid stools and occasionally - once a couple of days - a "reasonably good one")
May not be Humira related but just Crohn related.
We have tried a few things that would normally work with diarrhea. Peppermint tea, lots of rice, a few teaspoons of metamucil - all these don't help much. When we tried Imodium it did more harm as she had terrible pain inside her (abdomen i think).
Any ideas of what may cause this and how to try to treat it?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

If things had been reasonably in control and she suddenty lost control you have to be concerned about C difficile.  If that is the case, ask your physician.  The traditional wisdom had been that you had to have had antibiotic treatment in the previous 6 months.  Unfortunately this is no longer the situration.  In an IBD patient conrolled and then has acute increase in diarrhea, C diff must be ruled out.

Metamucil works for me, but I need 2-3 heaping tablespoons mixed in just a few ounces of water, then followed by 16-24 ounces of water in late afternoon. In morning a have a few slightly urgent bm's, nice and soft. Then I am good for the day usually. It's the only thing that keeps my D & C under control.
