Symptoms will magically disappear if lose weight

Mon, October 15, 2018 10:15 PM

Hey everyone.

Just a quick background, I was diagnosed in December 2017 with Crohn's. My mother is a nurse and has been for about 15 years or so, Throughout 2016-2017, I gained 50 pounds, so I am not a typical person with Crohn's that is so sick, they are skinny. My mom has been pushing the last few months of me losing weight (which I have been trying as my current weight makes me so depressed and extremely self concious) and if I lose the weight, my Crohn's symptoms will all but disappear and my Crohn's will likely no longer be active.... I don't have an active doctor at the moment, and I am on no medication. Has anyone else been told their weight is too heavy for Crohn's and that the Crohn's will disappear if the excess weight is lost?

I have colitis and lost about 50 pounds since I was first diagnosed and now my symptoms are just about as bad as they have ever been. So I don't think weight is the issue! But that's just my experience. But I would also say you need to get started on medication or some kind of treatment. I'd hate for it to just keep getting worse. Good luck!

Hi, I am so sorry you are experiencing this.

First off- get with a doctor asap!

Secondly- Crohns is not because of your weight. Even if you lose weight, you still have a condition and inflammation. That can be if you are skinny or overweight!

I suggest cutting out dairy and high fiber food. Start making a food journal and be prepared when seeing your doctor. Ask your doctor for a nutritionist that can work with you.

You may be gaining weight because you are eating a lot of food that is comfortable and safe to eat. Safe foods with IBD tend to be carb heavy.
