Stomach Pains & Nausea - Normal or Worrying?

Fri, December 07, 2018 4:35 PM

My 16-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Crohns in 2015. She was treated then and has been in remission since (I think). Earlier this week, she was on a field trip for school and felt sick - after coming home from school, she threw up. I thought it was a bug at first, but she wasn't acting like she had a stomach bug. She was fine and ate normally later that day. However, for three days now she has been nauseous, barely eating, and experiences stomach pains shortly after eating. Sometimes the pain and nausea gets bad enough that she dry heaves - which causes her stomach to hurt more and creates headaches too. Her GI set us up for an appointment to be seen on Tuesday morning.

All of this looks and feels very similar to when she was first diagnosed except that it seems to be more her stomach than bowel. I suspect it is a flare that is located more in the stomach and small intestine than in the colon because there is no diarrhea. She can hold food down but is not comfortable going to school because she is physically uncomfortable and occasionally feels like she is going to vomit. She has been home for two days this week and was sent home from school another day. She is going to miss next Tuesday for her doctor appointment already. My question is: do you think it's okay to wait to see a doc until Tuesday? Do I need to go to the ER or urgent care? It doesn't seem bad enough for that, but I'm really struggling with what to do for her in the meantime.

so i think it would be worring and i would get into the ER right away, did your daughter have tube feeding? i think that if she is still feeling bad after the doctor that your daughter gets even more help and lots of support.

I forgot one drug she takes for GI upset pantaprozale 2 times a day. This helps with the stomach pain.

Dear LGriffith42,

My 29 yo daughter has Crohn's Disease diagnosed in 2015. As far as your question about waiting to go see the doctor on Tuesday I would say follow your maternal instincts. It nearly takes an act of congress to get my daughter to agree to go to an ER. She has been in SO MANY emergency rooms throughout her short life that she hates it. last resort to go to an ER. She almost has to be dying to agree to go an ER.

The problem with waiting to see a doctor is if the flare up goes into remission in the meantime there is not any active indicators if you wait for your appointment time. My daughter's condition is so bad that her colorectal surgeon will let her just show up and wait to be worked into his schedule when she''s having a bad flare up. Maybe you could show up and ask her to be worked into the schedule?

How does your daughter feel about waiting? I would ask her how she feels about waiting.

My daughter's GI says that anytime she experiences a mucousy stool that indicates that she is having a flare up. This information was so helpful.

As far as the pain and nausea my daughter has pretty much learned to live with these symptoms. She says Phenergan helps more with nausea than Zofran. For the pain my daughter takes suboxone because she cannot tolerate any opiate pain killers.

She also has a regimen of about 13 OTC supplements that she takes before bedrime every night. The supplements help a great deal also. She takes Lialda 3 times a day for CD. Anorectal cream for painful flareups. She also easily gets rectal prolapse. The anorectal cream helps with the prolapses.

I don't know if any of this helps but I hope it does. CD is such a vicous disease. The rectal prolapses, the rectal bleeding and bloody diarrhea, the gut wrenching stomach pain and nausea and vomiting is something I would not wish onto an enemy. Hope your daughter gets help soon. Please post an update if you find anything helpful. I just found this forum about 30 minutes ago. Trying to get answers about rectal cream - trying to find out who uses what and what they found to be helpful. There is an OTC that has 5% lidocaine but it runs anywhere from $30 to $50.

Any helpful input appreciated.

Hi, I've recently joined this online group and wondered how your daughter is getting on and (selfishly) what you and she found helpful during this flare. Am in a similar situation with my Niece - same sort of age, tummy pain, some nausea etc. I noticed that nobody had replied to your post which is a shame. Have you found this community to be helpful? I'm in the UK and came across this site as I'm wanting to support my Sister in looking after my Niece. I hope you and your daughter are having a better January than last month. Best regards Alyson
