Hi all - has anyone had success in using probiotics to manage ulcerative colitis? I've been living with UC for nearly 10 years and while I've generally relied on mesalamine to control symptoms, I've been reading that probiotics can also be effective. Would be curious to hear experiences positive and negative. Thanks!

Hello!
I try to find probiotics that have these strains in them: lactobacillus, saccharomyces boulardii, and Bifidobacterium. I hear it is good for UC. Hope this helps.

Whenever my GI prescribed me a probiotic, it was never as a therapy on its own, it was always paired with mytherpay, more as a support, i think. As far as i know, it wouldn't be a bad thing to take probiotics, if anything it'll help strengthen your gut, but try finding ones that are specific for helping IBD. I used to take VSL3, but it's not availabel anymore because of patent issues, so i havent been on any in a while, but if it were avaiilable, I'd be taking it. Not sure if this helps, but hopefully you'll get iinsight and have something to talk about with your GI.
