buying food @ resturants and fast food places

Wed, October 30, 2019 6:12 PM

So when me and my family travel we like to stop and get somthing to eat. Well my parents are always looking at the giant menu to see what they have,well.... hmmm

Nothing awww man. We look at another place yes grilled chicken sandwich without bread. Anybody have any fast food places in mind. When we go to resturants they always have something but i have to ask them to remove all the spices. Most returants get it just right. My favorite resteraunt to get salmon at would probably be at stables. Any info on good food and anybody know what diet they are on? Any recomendations for places to eat and what to eat would be appreciated. Also i am on an all fruit, veggi, and meat diet.

Hello, evvy1010 I understand. I really enjoyed fast food like hamburgers and fries with a thick strawberry shake. These were my favorite fast foods that I really enjoyed. Now, I always order a chicken sandwich without mayonnaise and I have learned that dairy such as sweets or milk products do not agree with my digestive system. I really enjoy buffets where there are a variety of foods. I learned that it depends of the oils that the food is cooked with. I had to try different foods and learned how to prepare my food differently.

I hear you!  My coworkers stopped for a break at a coffee shop and I looked at the menu, and could eat... literally nothing.  MAYBE some of the plain teas, but really, there's not an easy way to know if they're safe so theyr'e better to just avoid.

I have basically written off restaurants.  I am on the SCD diet (early stages currently) which sounds a lot like what you're doing; unprocessed meat, veggies (with a couple exceptions, eg - potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, soy), and fruit.

Sorry it's not much help!  I know for me, it's more like... I'd rather save the money and eat something at home at this point because I know how sick it makes me if I try to stray from the diet, and I also don't trust menus enough to know that something is 'basic and plain' enough for me to be able to actually eat -- at that point you might as well save the money and fry up some chicken (or whatever) at home with what you know you can eat.  :)

I was thinking about whether there were SCD-friendly restaurants out there, and I imagine there are a few out in the world somewhere, but none that I have really come across yet.  :)  Just a bit of a lifestyle change, sadly!  (At least for me!)  I don't really mind going out to restaurants and just hanging out with friends without eating, though - it seems odd at first but knowing you'll be sick if you do eat the wrong stuff keeps me pretty satisfied with eating at home and spending time with friends who might be able to eat things that I can't -- it doesn't bother me much but it might take some getting used to!

I can relate. Whenever my family and I are in a long car ride, we stop at fast food places as it’s the only option available sometimes. I would just eat the French fries, chicken strips, or the Fish Filet. It’s not the best, but it’s better than me eating a burger. I try to bring IBD-friendly snacks with me wherever I go, like crackers. I hope you find what works for you. You are not alone!

I totally feel you on this. Fast foods, I usually have to resort to the fish sandwiches or chicken though sometimes the sauces they use contains dairy and that can cause me to flare up. Ice creams are hard to avoid during the summer also, but I pop a Lactaid pill to help with the dairy digestion and it works most of the time. I can do pizzas like at Pieology, or Blaze/Mod pizza because they offer dairy free cheese and the rest of toppings you can select. Can't do hardshell tacos anymore because of the corn tortillas. If I order from a taco joint, has to be on flour tortillas and soft tacos and can't do red chilli flakes either. French fries are sometimes a hit or miss, if it's plain fries like McDonalds than I often tolerate it but if it's well seasoned fries like a red robins or Popeyes Cajun fries, that will often make me feel a bit bad a few hours later. I can tolerate the chicken nuggets from McDonald's just fine with their mustard sauce. Need to lay low on the sugar though. Sodas, boba teas, heavily iced doughnuts also triggers my symptoms. As I write this, I had the opportunity to try the new Popeyes chicken sandwich and Cajun fries. I only had 1/4 of that sandwich and less than half of the fries and after a few hours I was back in bed trying to ride out a flare up. So far spent an entire day just trying to feel better. Also, the sandwich did not taste much better than Chick fillet's sandwich (that also caused me to flare up probably due to the buttermilk) so the hype was overrated and I paid a small price to experience that. I also cut down on my portions to prevent clogging my intestines, learned that after my 5th trip to the ER this year!
