Prescription assistance

Tue, September 22, 2009 12:02 PM

My husband was laid off from his job in January and diagnosed with Crohns in July. We have limited benefit health insurance through my part time job, but no prescription coverage. Medical bills and the cost of his 6MP have drained what little savings we had. Does anyone know of a good prescription assistance program?

A decent enough prescription assistance program has the potential to save you and your family a lot of money. It saved me quite a bit when I needed soma for back pain. Hence, these programs are very important.

Crystal I wish there was some way to help. I right now have about a 60 day supply of 6mp and asacol that I cannot even return to the pharmacy. I did not respond to either and am now trying remicade. On that being said try contacting the drug companies directly. As a nurse a lot times they have plans to help people without insurance.  If anyone reading this knows how I can donate unopened meds please let me know. I hate to just throw out medication when someone else can use it . Good  luck d

You should try calling the drug company that makes the drug.  Alot of times they will offer some type of assistance.  Especially the ones that are higher in cost, they have some forms for you to complete to find out if you are eligible or not.

Thanks for the website, fushiastarz, I'll check it out. I'm sorry to hear about your and your husband losing your jobs, I'll keep you and your family in my prayers. Can you keep you health insurance through Cobra? Since my husband was on as a contractor, we had no company benefits and couldn't apply. We live in TN and tried to apply for TennCare, but he didn't qualify. I might try and apply for medicaid, hopefully we'll qualify. Thanks for the help, all.

my doctor was a good resource for help with my enbrel. also since your husband has been laid off, you should file at your local office of public assistance for medicaid. it's a pain, but well worth it. you can also file for disability for your husband. that is a longer process, but it's retroactive back to when you filed.  god bless.

I came across a website www.needymeds.com .  I haven't tried it yet but it looks like it has lots of information.

My husband was laid off in Feb, both my 15 yr old son and I have Crohn's disease.  I will be losing my job in November which will end our insurance benefits,so I am collecting information.  There are other websites -- I'll try to find my list.  I also plan to try for medical through our State--Department of Human Services.  Some health departments help with prescription coverage.
