Can meds cause anxiety?

Tue, December 29, 2009 9:53 PM

I was diagnosed with UC about 10 years ago, and have used different forms of Mesalamine as the main treatment.

In the brochure recently published by the CCFA on meds and their side effects, I noticed that anxiety is listed as a possible side effect of Mesalamine.

About 7 years ago, I started having panic attacks and then felt generally anxious.  I have been struggling with anxiety ever since.  While I realize that simply having UC and dealing with the regular stresses in life could have caused the anxiety, I am now wondering if Mesalamine may be to blame.

Does anyone know how likely it is for Mesalamine to cause anxiety?

Hi, yes this has happened to me. I have uc very mildly and only take meds occasionally. I don't usually suffer from anxiety but, once I've been on mesalamine for a period I suffer from terrible sudden onset anxiety - usually when I'm starting to feel physically better, so it makes no sense that the disease is causing the anxiety. I have a sick and doomy feeling in the pit of my stomach, a racing mind, restlessness and a complete inability to sleep.

I hope this helps.
