Prednisolone side effects

Sun, December 01, 2019 12:18 PM

Hi, I've signed up to this forum as my daughter has been diagnosed with UC and after massive doses of steroids in a week long stay in hospital she is suffering badly with what I can only guess is predisolone side effects. On a visit back to the hospital last week we waited in a side ward all day only to told by 3 different doctors that her symptoms were unlikely to be down to the presnisolone. However I have found numerous forums online telling me the opposite and so I am at a loss as to how to help her. She suffers from anxiety and so every new symptom is causing her a lot of stress and panic.  Symptoms are debilitating dizziness, inner tremors, heart palpitations, extreme tiredness, headaches, itchiness. She has hardly been out of bed for 3 weeks and mostly needs my help just to walk to the toilet. She is on a tapered dose of 40mg reducing by 5mg every week. She is currently on 35mg but the symptoms started on day 4 of the IV and rectal steroids in hospital. I do hope that some of you can identify with these symptoms and let me know if this is normal on this drug and if there is any way to minimise symptoms. The UC has settled right down now, no pain, only slight bleeding. I also want to encourage my daughter to join this group when she's up to it as she's going to need a lot of support to get her head around this condition and so any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Yes, the symptoms that you’re describing can definitely be associated with prednisone. My boyfriend has experienced these side effects along with insomnia and mood swings. Unfortunately even after weaning off the drugs the side effects lingered

I suppose prednisone   could cause any of these symptoms.  It certainly causes problems long term. What other meds is she on? Almost any med will list dizziness as a side effect, and i’m Sure anxiety does too. Watch her appetite, because what they don’t tell you is prednisone makes you perpetually hungry (I found that out from a vet).i was gaining weight like crazy. I ditched the sweets and stocked up on celery.
