Hydration Options: Total Colectomy + J Pouch

Tue, September 24, 2019 11:10 AM

Hey guys, I had a total colectomy in 2003, due to UC. I have been struggling to find a hydration solution that works for me. Basically, I am looking for something low-cost, in a powder form, sugar-free, that does not cause diarrhea. I did Gatorade (regular) for many years, but gained a lot of weight due to the sugar content. Plus, I didnt want to be consuming that much sugar. Gatorade zero gives me diarrhea, so I did Powerade zero for a while. Lifestyle-wise, its a struggle to lug around that much Powerade on the go, and maintain the needed supply at home. I also noticed that Powerade Zero doesnt hydrate me as well.I tried a lot of the pre-mixed powders (sugar-free) but they give me diarrhea. I tried lime and salt mixed in water, but didnt feel fully hydrated. Next, I made a homemade solution (https://eatclosetohome.wordpress.com/2016/06/19/homemade-electrolyte-powder/), which I initally really liked, but that eventually caused diarrhea, probably due to the magnesium citrate. Today Ive started the WHO ORS formula (baking soda/powder, salt, potassium chloride, sweetener). Im cautiously optimistic, hoping it works and doesnt cause diarrhea. I use splenda for a sweetener, which seems to be ok, since I put it in my coffee without problems.Any tips from fellow colectomy-havers out there? Thanks guys, really appreciate it!!! :)

So it doesn’t meet your requirements but I’ve found that Body Amour works wonders. It’s bottled but has low sugar and natural hydration properties. I work out doors in southern Alabama so hydration is a struggle but it has become much easier with it.
