New doctor

Fri, April 14, 2017 12:32 AM

Hi!
Any advice about how to work with a new doctor? I recently switched from a pediatric gastro to one who works with adults (not by choice). I had my last doctor for about 8 years. And my new one made me nervous when she brought up remicaid, humaria, etc. (my old one kept it as the last medication before surgery.)  And the side effects scared me and my mom (specifically the rare cancers that remicaid could cause).

Hi. I'm a 58 year old mom with UC. My 28 year old daughter also has UC. Since my onset was in my early 20s, I never saw a ped doc. However, my daughter was diagnosed at age 8, so she has made the transition you are currently making. I registered on this website in the hope that I can be of some help to others navigating the many issues that come with IBD, so although I'm much older than you, I will share what I can. Making the transition from pediactric gastro doc to adult gastro doc can be difficult. It's important that you be your own advocate. Talk to the adult gastro doc about how your ped gastro doc described these treatements as last resort before surgery. Discuss your worries and fears about them. Most important, if this doc doesn't take your concerns seriously or makes you uncomfortable in any other way, keep shopping for another doc. Medicine is an art, not a science. You deserve a doc with whom you can comfortably partner. Perhaps this one can be that doc once you express your concerns. Be honest, and explain that you are looking for a partnership and you understand if s/he doesn't work that way. Move on if that's the case.
