how painful is Humira

Mon, July 24, 2017 9:14 AM

Hi I'm the mom of a 14 year old boy.
Just wondering if any other teens self adminster Humira and how painful it actually is.
We've read if you let it warm to room temperature it's not that bad.

Hi Sara! I was terrified before starting Humira because I hated needles but it was nowhere near as bad as I expected! I would recommend your son injecting on his stomach as I found that less painful than thighs. I also let the humira warm up for a few minutes before, and ice the injection site right after I inject. The only thing that is hard for me sometimes is the noise the pen makes when you inject. It is sudden and surprises me sometimes which makes me jump a bit but if you hold the pen tightly enough against the skin then it makes it much much easier and avoid a misfire! I also listen to music while I inject to make it a little less serious. I hope you and your son have found a good solution that is working!!! :)

hi! i actually self-administered the humira pen for 3.5 years and tried both the thigh and the belly areas. i found that the thigh area actually hurts during the injection and for roughly 15-20 minutes afterwards with some stinging (which is just the medicine settling in). however, the belly area (about 1 inch or 2 fingers width away from the either the right or the left sides of the belly button) isn't even comparable. there's the initial pinch of the needle going in and some slight stinging for about a minute after finishing up but that's about it. it all really depends on your own personal pain tolerance, though. i hope everything works out and isn't too unbearable!
