Son newly diagnosed and confused

Fri, July 06, 2018 2:21 PM

My 15 year old son was diagnosed in January. He was always a really picky eater, and then it got worse, and his weight dropped dramatically. He got diagnosed and was in hospital for 9 days. After we came home he was like a new child, he started eating everything. He never ate any meat before and then started eating meat and so much more. He was on Prednisone for awhile so I know that boosted the dental implant process alot also. After the Prednisone though he still ate pretty good. We are now into the seventh month after being diagnosed, and Id say the past month or so the eating has gotten worse and worse. Were back to where we were as to not eating anything. Im still new to this all so still learning. Is this mean another flare up?? Hes not complaining about belly issues so Im not sure whats going on. He does go in August for another scope. He is on a weekly injection of methotrexate to help control his disease.

Hi! I was 16 when diagnosed and I was on prednisone for a few months. I could sit and eat a whole cake at once. It did take about 3-4 months after I was completely off the steroids for all of my symptoms to go away. I would make sure you know about his bowel habits and how often he is going to the bathroom, but most likely he is only going back to normal.

Make sure he is open with you or someone about his bowel habits and intestinal symptoms.  It is very hard for a teenager to discuss this -- I know as my Crohns came on when I was 16.  If he is not  experiencing typical Crohn's discomfot or problematic bowel movements, then his appetitie issue could be coming from somewhere else, especially if it pre-dated Crohn's onset.

Good Luck!

Thank you for your advice. And yes I forgot to mention that he is on a weekly injection of methotrexate.

Hi,

I wouldn't stress just yet, prednisone is a steriod which has lasting side effects for much longer than you may think. so even though you son has been off it for a little while, it has most likely just taken a  little more time for the effects to wear off and that's why his eating habits have returned to they way they were before. but as another memeber mentioned I would hope that your son is on something else to manage his condition now that he is no longer on the prednisone otherwise yes there may be some cause for concern. if this is the case I would suggest perhaps looking at a different dr to manage your sons treatment as it's not as simple as going on and off courses of prednisone.

Is your son on any sort of maintenance medication? If not he is more than likely to flare up again because the prednisone is used to stop flares and it is not for long term use. This may be why he is not eating as much and might be an indicator that he is flaring up again.
