Do you ever feel normal again?

Thu, November 29, 2018 12:18 AM

Hi. I was just recently diagnosed with Crohn's, less than two weeks ago. I have started prednisone and have seen my symptoms get mildly better, but not as much as I would have hoped. I may need to ask my doctor to increase my dosage while I wait for the insurance company to approve Humira, which is the next step.

But my question is... do you ever feel back to normal? Like as good as before you started having symptoms and were diagnosed? Are there days without pain? I feel like I'm putting my life on hold to start these medications because I'm waiting for the day when I wake up and feel like my old self. But as I read more about Crohn's disease, I get more and more scared that I'll never feel good or normal again, just better than usual.

I'm just starting to feel very hopeless. How well do medications like Humira, etc. actually make you feel?

I am with you.  I was diagnosed 6 months ago.  It felt like forever before I got onto Humira.  Then I thought that it would magically fix things but it doesn't.  I don't know if you ever feel like yourself.  There are days, still, I get that hopeless feeling.  But since I have been on Humira, and learned what foods will keep me out of a flare, my hopeless days are not as often.  I am learning that I may not be my old self but I am a stronger self.  Plus the days that are good, I tend to enjoy them a little more and not take them for granted.

Your cannot help what is happening to you.  Always keep that in mind.  You can help yourself though.  Learn what you can and cannot eat.  Rest when your body tells you to and just enjoy the days that are good.  They do come more often as you get on your normal medicine routine.

I wish you well and always know that you are not alone.  There are others experiencing the same thing you are.  Knowing that alone can sometimes help you when you feel like it just isn't going to get better.

Coming from someone newly diagnosed (May 2018) -- if you can figure out the right set of meds, and your triggers, yes you will feel better. The hardest part for me is remembering on bad days that it will get better. I have had days where I don't have symptoms at all anymore, and it hasn't been a full year.

I use the app Cara to track my symptoms, figure out what foods make me worse, and to remind myself that my day is not all bad when I have a small flare.

You WILL feel better. And the most helpful thing someone said to me the past few months was to remember that you body can't help it, it is just doing its best. Don't get angry, and when you feel like your body is betraying you, just remember-- its trying to make you feel good, its just a little confused as to how to do so. Be patient as it relearns how to be normal.

Sending you best wishes and postive vibes.

Yes, you do. You will not always be in a flare and it takes time. IBD for 18 years.
