Steroids not working

Tue, December 04, 2018 6:48 PM

My husband was recently diagnosed with severe UC, basically his whole colon is affected. He’s been going at it for a month now. He is currently hospitalized, can’t eat or drink because it sends him straight to the restroom. He is getting Iv Fluids and nutrition; Possibly a blood transfusion.  Steroids don’t seem to be working so they are planning to start him on remicade. We have a consult with a surgeon tomorrow they say “so we are not blindsided if the remicade doesn’t work”. The goal is to save his colon. Anyone ever have or heard of a case this severe and the remicade worked preventing surgery?  And the surgeon says he is so sick he couldn’t operate now if he wanted to. I’m at a loss. Any advice or encouragement appreciated. Thank you!

The goal of maintenance medications such as Remicade is to calm the inflammation and allow the body to heal itself, preventing the need for surgery. Remicade can take time to kick in, and then his body has to heal, so it may be a slow process to getting better.
