Exercise/Physical Activity

Mon, January 11, 2021 7:55 PM

I was recently diagnosed with UC. Before this first flare up, that I'm still recoverying from, I was very active. I jogged every morning, I have a very physically active job working in construction, and I love hiking.
Has anyone found physical activity and exercise to aggrivate their condition or cause flare ups?
My primary care physician said it shouldn't but she also said the best people to ask are the ones who have UC.

I love to jog and run 5Ks. The only issue I have had with running and UC is every time I start running in the spring (I don't run a ton in the winter) I get constipation. I asked my doctor about this and he said that this is quite common, but they don't know the physiological reason for this. He recommended that I take MiraLAX to help with this issue. This seems to help. I will definitely keep running as long as I can because it is a great stress reliever.

Hi! I've had UC for over 20 years. When I am in remission I have no problems exercising. But during a flare up I just can't seem to muster the strength. I also love hiking but, sometimes, going uphill will make me feel the urge to go. Very weird! Yoga seems to help a lot with things though. It's not too intense but it really gives me a workout. Personally, I feel more comfortable if there is a bathroom in the vicinity.

Actually quite the opposite!  Feel much better after physical activity.  Hard to get the energy when having flare-ups, but find the body feels better after even mild exercise. I'm in a flare up right now, and I go down and get on my Pilates machine and glider, and do weights each morning. Feel worse when I don't.  Good luck!

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and encouragement!
I absolutely agree, the benefits of my exercise routine goes way beyond just physical fitnesses. So if jogging doesn't work anymore, I'll keep looking until I find the right fit.
I hope the extra iron can boost your energy! And your running!

I was just diagnosed too and am an avid runner. I absolutely feel running caused urgency while running until I improved on meds. I don't think it contributes to symptoms when not running. Now that I drink less caffeine and am better on meds, I can run farther. I wish I had more energy while running and hope new iron supplement for iron deficiency will help. It is so important for our mental and heart health to stay active! Good luck
