Stelara

Wed, November 28, 2018 2:22 PM

I started Stelara this past spring after Humira treatment began to fail.  The first infusion (load dose) went fine and I was given benadryl.  First injection, I had a little injection site reddness.  56 days later and next injection I had itching on both sides of stomach and around injection site for a few weeks.  Then next injection, I had extreme itching.  I guess I thought the reaction should get better, not worse over time and the Stelara was helping my crohns symptoms.  The final injection I had the worst reaction but not immediate.  It started with itching for a week, then the next went up my neck and my face and lips swelled.  The rash blistered a bit and I had what looked liked chicken pox.

I was seen by a derm, my GI, and immunologist.  All agreed it was the stelara and I should be taken off.  I was treated with Prednisone and topical cream. I do not have antibodies for Remicade so am going back on it (I took it almost 10 years ago).

I have been off the Stelara but the rash continues.  I have finished the prednisone course.  They are now wondering if  the Stelara and my reaction triggered another type of autoimmune skin condition,  I will be doing a biopsy next week.

Anyone else have a reaction like this to a biologic?  I have never had skin issues.  Thank you
