The Barnett Continent Intestinal Reservoir (BCIR)

Tue, December 11, 2018 4:51 PM

I'm just wondering why The Barnett Continent Intestinal Reservoir (BCIR) procedure is not more well known and talked about for Ulceritive Colitis? I've had UC for over 20 years and I only just found out about this procedure a few weeks ago by accident. I searched the Crohns and Colitis foudation website and nothing came up about it. Shouldn't all options be on this website?

BCIR is not a terribly common procedure.  It is mainly used for patients who are unable to undergo a J pouch or who have had a failed J pouch and can’t tolerate or don’t want an ileostomy.  There are substantial complications reported, and multiple revisions are common, but not much has been written on it in the scientific literature during the past 10 years.  There are advertising websites that can be found online though.
There are probably other procedure, not named Koch or Barnett, named after other folks too.  For more information, contact the IBD Help Center at info@crohnscolitisfoundation.org
