resection

I have been advised to get a resection of my terninal ilium. I have Crohns and I have had it for forty years. I am currently on humira.

Can anyone share their experience with having a resection for Crohns? I feel scared to have this operation.

In case you have not already had the surgery. Why is it recommended? I had surgery about 15 years ago because the crohns scarring on my transverse was constricting the space and my GI , who was in general very helpful, said it was better to be proactive than have it done as an emergency. In retrospect, I should have investigated other options. The surgery was laparoscopic, I was out of the hospital in 3 days and recovered well, but I was left with adhesions and malformation that makes it impossible to do a full colonoscopy, not good in long-term crohns. So ask all the questions about options and what will happen if I do or don't. If you have it, take the advice about getting up and walking as soon as possible. And not lifting anything at all for a month.

Ive had Crohns since 2000, and resection of section of my traverse colon in 2012. I was very scared prior, and kept second-guessing if it was the right decision of if the Doctors had other options they could try instead.
i feel it ended up being the right decision for me

A very tough 9 days in hospital, but after a couple of months I was feeling pretty good, and following surgery (and while continuing Humira) I had 7 subsequent years of remission.

I had resectioning oct 2018 at mayo in Rochester mn. It was kinda tuff first few days and had a ng tube. Mayo did it robotically which was great. Sometime after surgery I contracted ecoli and spent 6 months trying to get rid of it. I was on cipro for so long that I ended up with an infection in my esophagus, so took meds for 21 days to get rid of that. In july when I was finally clear of ecoli I started having kidney stone issues. They wouldn't pass. Finally at the end of September the stones had grown to 8.5 mm. I ended up with a stent until just last week only because my whitecount was too high to blast stone. Mayo said the ilium resectioning is very much the cause of stones due to that section being a significant part to digesting nutrients. Now I'm trying to figure out how to reduce/eliminate getting kidney stones. I also started stelara around july. Makes me feel ill the first day. I've failed all other biologics in 14 years. I've focused on diet, eliminating coffee...I miss it. The resectioning also cause me to not produce enough bile to digest food so I started on a powder called questran but I hated it so mayo suggested a pill medication and it is wonderful. It's been quite a journey after surgery. Worth it, yes...but more issues to deal with.
