Rowasa enemas difficulty

Tue, February 16, 2021 7:53 AM

Six months ago I started Rowasa enemas during a flare of my ulcerative colitis. While awful to do, I seemed to tolerate them well most days. I am flaring up again and more enemas, paired with prednisone. My doctors are reworking my medication regime overall at the moment. However the enemas are going terribly! I can't keep them in for more than a few minutes and the bathroom purge that it seems to trigger is exhausting and demoralizing. I don't understand what's changed. Does anybody have enema experience they would be willing to share that might be helpful?

I know enemas really do stink, and I know exactly what you mean about feeling awful when you can't hold it in. I've found some things that helped me are staying in the exact same position once I put it in for at least an hour or two, watching a movie or TV so it'll distract me from feeling it, and making sure I've gone to the bathroom beforehand so I don't need to get up. You might try kegel exercises as well, which can strengthen the muscles so you can hold it in.

Sorry you're struggling with this. I really hate them too, but they seem to work better than other medicines for me because they're focused to the area. Good luck!
