Handicap Parking Signs

Mon, June 23, 2008 11:20 PM

I saw bits and pieces about this posted in other threads but I couldn't seem to find a definite answer. I saw some people were saying they got approved for the sign to put in your car that lets you park in a handicap space in case you need to park quickly and run to the bathroom somewhere. Can someone tell me how to apply for one of those because I think that would be a tremendous help.

Thanks so much!

I am trying to compile a list of each states' eligibility for handicap parking, and for the 6 states I have looked at, sorry for the slow pace, all are pretty much a big fat no. The basic gist so far has been as follows:

"Statute 8-1,124: Accessible parking, definition. As used in this act, "person with a disability" means any individual who:

      (a)   Has a severe visual impairment;

      (b)   cannot walk 100 feet without stopping to rest;

      (c)   cannot walk without the use of or assistance from, a brace, cane, crutch, another person, prosthetic device, wheelchair or other assistive device;

      (d)   is restricted by lung disease to such an extent that the person's forced (respiratory) expiratory volume for one second, when measured by spirometry, is less than one liter or the arterial oxygen tension is less than 60 mm/hg on room air at rest;

      (e)   uses portable oxygen;

      (f)   has a cardiac condition to the extent that the person's functional limitations are classified in severity as class III or class IV according to standards set by the American heart association; or

      (g)   is severely limited in such person's ability to walk at least 100 feet due to an arthritic, neurological or orthopedic condition."

This is the law as it applies to the state of Kansas. I think this would be a great issue to write to our congress men and women and state representatives to try to get some awareness of what it is like having to hunt for the closest parking spot we can find to some place, to then run to the bathroom, only to discover that we were unsuccessful in our attempts at avoiding an accident.

Hi. I applied for a Handicap parking placard and was denied by the Registry of MV in MA.  I downloaded an applcaition from their website sent it to my dr. for completion and then sent the completed form to the RMV.  within two weeks I was informed I was not eligible.  There is an appeal mechanism but in the City of Boston it's become and issue because of abuse and i felt the appeal would not be successful

I don't have one myself, but I believe there is a form that must be obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles to apply for a handicap sticker.  Your doctor has to sign off on it and state why you need it.  Your doctor's office may even have the form.
