NEW PREP FOR COLONOSCOPIES

Thu, May 22, 2008 6:21 PM

My doctor just told me that there is a new prep for colonoscopies.  Instead of the Golightly there is something with Gatorade and Miralax.  So if you like Gatorade you will do fine.  Has anyone tried this yet?  If so, is it much better?

Thank you!

I am doing the prep right now.  I am rotating between crystal lite and ginger-ale.  Not bad at all.  I took 2 dulcalox at noon and will take 2 more at 4:00.  My colonoscopy is tomorrow.  Not bad.

I actually use Gatorade to mix with my Golightly also.  You can't use anything with red in it, so i use the original lemon/lime flavor.  True, i never want to drink it other than for my preps now, but it helps a lot, and there is always fruit punch Gatorade for my non-prep times.

Yes, I used Miralax for my prep. My doctor also had Dulcolax in the regiman but since I was having diarrhea for so long, he said I could skip taking them. There were a few options to use for mixing but Gatorade was their 1st choice....I used iced tea though. It wasn't bad at all. Just a tad salty

The last time I had a colonoscopy, I used Fleet - 1.5 ounces in water chased with apple juice.  Unfortunately, with Fleet you have to do it twice - once at 2:00 pm and once at 8:00 pm.  It is a whole lot less to drink, though.

Your poor 6 year old had to go through that?  Poor thing!  I have a 6 year old also and hope she doesn't need this anytime soon since I have Crohn's and she has constipation problems at times.

I hope all went well with the colonoscopy.

Good luck!  Let me know how it goes - with the Miralax and the prep.  I will say a prayer for you.

I have a colonoscopy this Thursday, and I will be doing the Gatorade & Miralax on Wednesday, so I'll let you know how "easy" it is.

My dad did this prep and said it was not bad at all.

Wish me luck.

I'm not sure how "new" this prep is.  I know that I've used it, and it's been about 3 years since then...
You have to make sure you're not using certain colors of gatorade, like anything with red in it.  Your doctor can let you know for sure.  I found it tastes better the colder it is, but drinking that much of something cold can make you really cold too.  I have never been a huge fan of gatorade, but once I used it for a colonoscopy prep, I've never wanted to drink it again.  The good news is, once you get through the prep the rest is much easier!  Fortunately (?) for me my colon has been removed, so no more traditional colonoscopies.  If the do need to check things out, I just have to go on a clear liquid diet for a while.

My 6 yo had a colonoscopy recently and had to drink a capful of miralax with 6-8 ounces of fluid every 15 minutes.  Poor baby drank 15!! glasses before I said forget it, no more.  He was clean enough, but not totally cleared out.

We used water so I don't know if there's something about the gatorade that might help it along, but it was alot to drink.
