How do you deal with . . .

Wed, July 15, 2009 10:42 AM

How do you deal with fecal incontinence  ---- particularly odor?  It is becoming more and more embarrassing with my condition (Crohn's).  I am scheduled to see a specialist in August because I may be facing a colostomy due to a rectal stricture.  Does anyone have any advice on this embarrassing subject?  Period pads just dont do the trick any more.  I am going to move onto Poise pads (a very depressing move on my part).  Any advice, experience, or encouragement would be appreciated!  I'm trying not to get too depressed over the whole thing, but I'm losing the battle.  I feel like the whole world knows I can't control my bowels.

I also know how you feel. I am 45 yrs old and have had Crohns for 25 yrs. Its been the same problem with me and having "accidents" for the last 7/8 yrs. Even when my Crohns is in remmission I have problems. I was just at Mayo last week having surgury again for it. My problem is in my recton and anus. Old scar tissue and strictures closing things down. Also having to have tags removed all the time makes you loose your muscle. Making it hard to control things. Once or twice a year they have dialate things to keep it moving. But now theres no time to get to the bathroom. I to carry extra things with me all the time. I know where all the restrooms are everywhere I go. And with even an thought that I might, i take a B line to get there in time. But its not always enough. Your so right it is embarrising. Just know you are not alone in this. We all feel just like you. Its the life god has given us. But it just sucks most days. Keep your chin up.

Hi,

I had the same problem, so embarrasing.  I used to carry and use pads all the time, and always wore dark clothes. Once  I started on Remicaide, it stopped, thank goodness.  I have been on it a few years now and no more leaks. (knock on wood.)

Good luck, Karen

Hey, I have UC and not really sure what you would call my problem I guess leakage. My mother has suggest the same thing to wear period pads but it hasn't gotten that pad yet I least I dont think. If my UC is under control I don't have as much of a problem. It is nice to know that someone else understand what I'm going through.

Thanks for listening,

Amy

I have UC and have had the same thing happen to me many times. I have little kids so my bag is pretty big, but I always carry extra underwear, wipes and a little bottle of body spray. Then in case it happens again, which sometimes it has, I have an extra set in the car. I'm sorry and know how you feel. Hang in there!!!
