Hi, I have a 2 month old baby and UC. I had a flare up during my second trimester of my pregnancy and I was aparently going on remission a month prior to Liam's birth.
Sadly (and like any UC patient know), The disease is very active again. I am taking mesalasine, 3grms a day. My concern is not over the meds during breastfeeding for my GI, my OBGYN and the pediatrician told me the pros and cons of using meds...my concern is: Is it possible that my overreactive immune system passes through the breast milk? Is it possible that the immune system cells that are agresive with my intestine, may be harmful to my baby? Anybody know about this?
Thanks a million.

Thank you so much for your input. I`ll try to contact La Leche league. I dídn´t e mail you for the numbers cause I am currently living outside of the US, so I`ll just look on the web. And you are so right...I should be proud for breastfeeding in my condition...I`ll keep it in mind.
Hope you feel fine.

I am breastfeeding with CD and I know how you feel. My son is now 5 months old and I believe my symptoms started in my first trimester, but I was not diagnosed until he was 2 months old and I had been experiencing a full on flare for at least 4 months.
I have found it useful to contact a La Leche League member several times with my concerns. I have a few phone numbers if you are interested. Just email me at ramyrain@aol.com and I will send them to you. I just dont want to post them in a forum, but they are also available on the web or you can call:

Good luck to you, and you should be proud that you are able to breastfeed during this illness. Congrats!
