Want to get pregnant - waiting on remission -birth control

Mon, April 18, 2011 9:32 PM

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with Crohns disease in Jan. 2011, so far only near the cecum.  I'm having a capsule endoscopy done tomorrow to see if any inflammation can be found in my small intestine (fingers crossed for a negative result!).
I've been fortunate to have mild symptoms (some D, twinges of localized abdominal pain, some joint stiffness), but none of this seems to have been helped by the 5-ASA that I'm taking (Apriso).
My husband and I have a 21 month old son and would LOVE to have another baby, but I can't get pregnant until I  get a clear scope.  I'm so frustrated that I can't do anything to help make this get better.
I currently have the Mirena IUD and have started thinking that I should have it removed before I get into remission so that the removal doesn't spark another flare - anyone have experience with this?
Thanks for any input/support.

I have UC and with my first pregnancy I was in remission and had a flare 12 weeks into it... had a healthy baby boy. My second and third pregnancies I had VERY active flares and still had two more healthy babies. It is different for everyone so I wish you the best of luck and God bless!

Hi:) My GI urged me to wait until I was in remission to get pregnant...I did but started having really bad flares at about 6 weeks pregnant. Was put on Remicade and very low Prednisone (maybe 20 mg a day for a few months) and it put me back into remission. I have UC though (I know Chrons is a whole differnt level) Make sure to check your BC and see how it effects your disease if you haven't already. I was on oral BC (Yaz) for years before a nurse showed me recently a scale( I think it was from 1-4) that shows the "safety" of different BC and different diseases/conditions. I think that the IUD was safe though, sorry I can't remember what the scale/rating was called!

Good luck and hope you're feeling well soon:)
