Hi,
I'm Bailey. I was diagnosed with Crohn's in early June after a big flare up. Several doctor visits, pills, and weeks later, I was on the road to remission. I'm now feeling fine for the most part. The most my disease has affected me lately is that I occasionally have to vomit in the morning (I think due to the amount of pills I'm taking to suppress my immune system, as well as pills attempting to clear my skin). Other than that, I've been okay for the most part. I haven't really been avoiding any types of food and I haven't had any flare ups.
I just started my first year away at college. I remember my mom telling me several months ago that I wasn't allowed to have any popcorn after attempting to eat a little bit while recovering. I just bought some microwaveable popcorn at the store the other day. While talking on the phone with my mom today, I mentioned it to her and, like predicted, she told me that I probably shouldn't be eating it. I kind of protested ands she told me to simply look it up, that it won't necessarily make me sick, but it might hurt my intestines. My mother is a nurse, by the way (it made the whole diagnosis and remission process probably a lot better because of that). She told me to do some research on it and thus far, I haven't really found anything conclusive. Would you recommend me staying away from popcorn?
Thanks.

Popcorn probably isn't a good idea right now. it took me a year after I was off steroids and in remission with diet alone did I try homemade popcorn in coconut oil. It has a lot of fiber. Anything with a lot of fiber will be tough on your intestines.
If you want to be able to get off some of those meds, you will have to address your diet. I know that it's especially hard for a college student to do that, but going gluten free may also help with the rash. Dairy might also be giving you problems.

I'm taking Imuran every day for my disease. Over the summer, I was on Prednisone. No longer on that anymore, but my skin broke out in a horrible rash over the summer and my dermatologist thinks it's a reaction to the Prednisone. I've had it for over 3 months now and it's just gotten worse. I've had acne problems all throughout high school and finally about a year and a few months ago, I started seeing a dermatologist. She put me on Bactrim pills to help my skin and they helped me a lot. I stopped taking them briefly around the time I was diagnosed because I was worried they were the cause of my sickness. My GI doctor and my dermatologist worked together and I started back on the pills, but this rash hasn't gone away. It's some sort of acne and it's all over my body. My dermatologist recently started me on another med as well, and I think it's just all been too much on my stomach. I've been vomiting in the morning around once or twice a week, and my skin still really hasn't been helped at all. I've heard of Remicaid, but this is what my GI doctor suggested. I'll make note to ask him about it when I see him over Thanksgiving break I guess.

High-fiber foods might present a challenge if your disease is active--especially insoluble fiber. And what's with all the pills? Which ones are you taking? Has your doctor mentioned anything about Remicade? Just curious about what he's giving you and why, must to compare notes.

Listen to your Mom, I know how much popcorn is loved by us all, but your mom knows best. As an alternative, look for Pirate Booty in the store. It has a similar crunch to popcorn with out the residue and is much easier to digest.
