Paleo Diet - a way of life

Tue, May 17, 2011 12:54 PM

I'm a 35 y/o female who suffered with moderate Ulcerative Colitis for over 14 years. On March 8, 2011 I began The Paleo Diet with the help & advice from my bf. He came across this diet while listening to a podcast. It has truly changed my life for the better. I was on medicine after medicine (Asacol, Colace, Rowasa, mesalamine, prednisone & a couple more) over the years. Not once did my GI doctor ever mention to change my diet drastically to see if it would help. He simply stated "do not eat what aggravates it" - which was basically everything & anything I put in my mouth. At times I would go for 2 days without eating & still be symptomatic (left-sided abdominal pain, severe gurgling that would wake me up in the morning, 10-20 trips to the bathroom per day, not to mention the 2-4 hour ritual of getting out of bed in the morning - I could not leave my house until my belly was done doing what it had to do, fatigue, depression, anxiety, embarressment). By day 5 of the Paleo Diet, I felt an 80% improvement. The only side effect I had while detoxing my body was nausea which eventually went away after approximately 4 weeks. This way of eating is not for the weak, only for the determined. It is a way of life, a good life. I will be forever grateful for all Robb Wolf's research & for my bf for his persistance, support, & patience. I wish you all could hear the sincere gratitude in my voice. This diet has truly changed my world. I am an entirely new person. I only have 1-2 bm's in the morning now then I am good to go for the rest of the entire day...what a dramatic difference. I will never again eat the way I did prior to March 8, 2011. I hope that my testimony will guide other suffers of UC into trying this way of life. Thank you for your time.

I have had UC for 13 years and have had the same experience with doctors advising to just eat what i doesn't bother you. The problem is over the first several years i gained weight which finally stabilized when i was diagnosed and treated with Hashimoto's. I just have not been able to lose it. I have somewhat learned to live with my UC but regularly have flare ups.

I workout with a crossfit gym and we have been doing a paleo challenge for the last 3 months. For some reason I have had the worst flare ups since i started the paleo. I don't know why it is not working for me.

Maybe the SCD or GAPS would work better in my case? Does anyone have any ideas of what i can do? I desperately want to get both my UC and weight under control.

I would reccomend outlining the basic structure of all three diets and make sure to go over your plans and concerns with your gastroenterologist. Journaling your experience should help you identify successes and concerns, and help them track your progress.  I would also see if you could meet with a nutritionist who has experience dealing with IBD and see what they say as feedback to all three.
Keep an open and educated mind!  And remember to do things for your emotional well being to manage stress!
And share your experience with us; we would alll love to hear how it goes!

Thanks Alan for your reply.

The human body is truly a miracle! I tried some peanuts a few weeks ago, immediately got heartburn. I believe my body is telling me that it is garbage for me. So I have already sworn them off. Anything else in the SCD that's flawed?

I was just diagnosed with UC on May 18. I know I have a world of decisions to make. I am what you would called a determined individual. Thinking that I was a Celiac, before I was diagnosed properly, I did a gluten free diet for 7 months. It was hard, expensive, and rather boring. But temptations to give in and eat foods with gluten never worked on me. I know the Paleo diet is a little more difficult to follow, but I feel ready to try. I'm just not sure if I should do GAPS or SCD or Paleo. Still looking into it. Are there any deciding factors I should consider?
