So like most people in the morning I am sleepy and not exactly alert when I arrive to work. Can I take small doses of caffeine? or is it not even worth the potential side-effects?

keep a thorough accounting of gut symptoms without and then with increasing amounts starting small. How you take the caffeine may or may not cause issues for your gut. But if you consider it an experiment and track the results- you will know!
I would also recommend trying a hot beverage without the caffeine (herbal tea as an option) and a small breakfast with protein and complex carbohydrates. That could go a long way to getting you awake and some long burning energy rather than the caffeine and quick burning sugars.
Good luck, and share your results

Thanks for the input everyone - I think I will try it small amounts out to see if I can tolerate it.

i have crohns and i faithfully drink a cup of coffee everyday. i would admit somedays i have to reap the effects of drinking coffee when my tummy disagrees, but depending on your tolerance i guess, you will be able to decide if it will be good for you. gd luck

You are really just going to have to test it out and see what's best for you. I had to cut out caffeine almost completely! It wasn't easy since I was working graveyard shifts at the time but I did survive. I found especially after my first flare up that caffeine caused a lot of intestinal pain! However, I have UC not Crohn's so it might be different. I've had friend's with UC however, that are okay with moderate amounts of caffeine.

Thanks for the link! - good info. I think i'm essentially already on the paleo diet. I only eat whole foods, no dairy, lean meats, and green leafy veggies, organic fruits.
