SCD Clinical Trial

Thu, June 09, 2011 6:03 PM

I just bought the book SCD Lifestyle Surviving to Thriving by Jordan Reasoner and Steven Wright... and the bonus books SCD Lifestyles Frequently Asked Questions and 25 Ways to Hack the SCD Lifestyle. I planned on doing this diet alone, as I am a very determined individual and have done diets on my own before. But my husband just got some bloodwork results back from the VA, and it looks as though he is going to need to do it with me. Im excited that I wont be alone in it this time!

www.scdiet.org (to learn about the diet)

Then I called a hospital that is performing a clinical trial on patients with UC or CD that are planning on starting the diet. They will examine my stool before, during, and later on in the diet. They pay for everything, and Im excited to be a part of something good like this.

Question for anyone who may know: Do I need to read Breaking the Vicious Cycle before or after the Lifestyles book? The Lifestyles book is intended to help people start the SCD properly and in a way that helps you not want to quit.

That's incredible! I'm glad she does so well!

As for me... I'm patient and determined. I love when there is light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you for sharing that with me!

Katya - thanks so much for replying. I do keep a detailed journal. It has helped me an awful lot. Good suggestion. And I highly recommend it to any readers of this thread.

I track all my activities (including exercise), my sleep patterns, my pain (location and severity), as well as other symptoms, medicine taken (amount and time of day), bowel movements (frequency, consistency, time of day, and physical effects associated with each), meals (I list all ingredients used), renal activity, etc.

I love my journal, as you can probably tell. I think I may need a new one soon. Already!

Again, thanks for all your advice! Stay healthy!

I would read breaking the vicious cycle first.

in response to the cauliflower, squash, rice and potatoes concern - if you are in active flares, make sure you are keeping a detailed journal.

Your body will tell you when you start listening with a fine tooth comb. Just be really careful about volumes of fiber; and understanding the difference between soluble/insoluble fiber.

Broccoli and cauliflower actually cook quicker and more thoroughly steamed - make sure they are thoroughly cooked before you mash, and watch what you put into it for flavor.

That's an interesting article, Alan. Thanks for the link. I suppose all I can do is try it, right?

I really appreciate your concern. You seem to care so much about the well-being of others. How has your daughter been? Does she live a pretty regular life? I'm looking forward to doing that again.

Thanks for your advice. The squash sounds great. I bet I could stomach that in a flare. The cauliflower, though? I was told that we should avoid cabbage family foods during a flare, including cauli and broccoli. (Information published in a UC pamphlet my doctor gave me.) Thoughts? You have experience in this, so do share, please...

Alan, I am so happy that you replied! YOU are a huge reason I am doing this diet. Your posts to other people have inspired me so much. Thank you. Of course the main reason I am doing this diet is for me and my family, but you're a huge source of motivation and information for me.

I am a little concerned about the no rice, no potato thing. During a flare, those two "staple" foods seem to be the only things my body wants to eat. Everything else smells like a sewer to me. No matter how much love was put into preparing my meal, I always run to the toilet ready to vomit over the smell. I think the reason that I like rice and mashed potatoes (other than the fact that they are so soft) is that they don't really smell like anything to me and they both taste so bland, Any advice on that?
