I really want to start working out again. I used to be in somewhat decent shape ( I could run 1.5miles in under 12 minutes easily, do over 100 sit-ups and 50 push-ups in 2 min, and was a division I college rower), but now I am completely out of shape. I've been on prednisone (and on my butt) for awhile (now down to 5mg! ) so I've gained 22lbs since I graduated college May 2011. And most of the weight, thanks to prednisone and my not so great eating habits (hey I like cupcakes!!!
) is centered in my stomach making it so that I don't want to wear some of my clothes because they now are too tight. I'm now feeling much better (almost in remission for the first time pretty much ever (I've had crohns for 2yrs) )and have the energy to start working out again.
Point is, I don't know where to start. People have told me I start out too hard, get too frustrated, and burn out. I want to actually be able to stick to my workout this time. Things I have at my disposal for workouts: an erg, a stationery bike (screen doesn't turn on, but I can still pedal), lots of big hills, a safe running/walking area, 8lb weights, and I'm thinking about getting a cheap bike and some 5lb weights from Target. Currently I work from 7-3 (pretty much working/traveling to/from work from 5:30am-4:30pm) and the only exercise I've been doing is using stairs instead of the escalators for the metro, and walking my dog when I come home from work (25min walk). I walk more on the weekends, as I will walk up to starbucks ( 2.5 miles ), and walk my dog three times.
My best friend wants me to run a 10k with her in June. My goal is to be able to run the entire time, I don't care how long it takes me to finish. I would also like to lose some weight, but that's not as important to me as being able to get back in shape so that I can do things like play sports or row again.

I think it is a good thing to have an education. I think that education is important because it helps you to get a job and make money. If you don't have an education, then you can't get a job and make money. Education will help me when I go out in the world to work. The educational purposes will also help me when I have children because they need care and attention, so there are lots of things that education will help me with.

I know how you feel, I was in spectacular shape when the Crohns hit me 7 years ago and I am just NOW starting to feel up to exercising. I walk a lot at work (12hr nurse shifts do that) when I found that I was not "dead" at the end of the day, jus mildly tiered, I decided it was time to state working out again. I joined a gym and started a couch to 5k program. I run at a park with available bathroom facilities and I just try to not eat before or take an immodium to ensure a finished workout with minimal breaks. As you start out remember if it hurts, STOP!!! no pain no gain is not always the best policy you can end up hurting yourself and causing more recovery time then you already had. I agree with a Yoga routine, there are routines out there that are designed for digestive difficulties and will help get your muscles limber again.
Take it easy and ramp yourself up, but I hope you get back to a level of "shape" that is acceptable for you.

Hey Ash! I have found that dancing and yoga help in terms of working out, as does walking. As a rule of thumb, provided by my Gastroenterologist (this is a somewhat paraphrased version of what my doctor said), don't exercise more than you usually do...or something along that line.
I would keep up the walking and slowly work your way up to using weights (although 5 pound weights should not be a problem). I would also recommend swimming (it works every muscle in the body and not too strenuous).
