I have UC and recently had emergency surgery that left me with an end ileostomy. My second surgery is scheduled in a few weeks and they will reverse the end ileostomy, create the J-pouch and leave me with a loop ileostomy.
My question is... will the loop ileostomy be in the same place as my end ileostomy is now? Or do they sew up the hole and cut a new hole in my abdominal wall for the loop ileostomy?

I went through a similar procedure last year. In my case, the surgeon created a loop ileostomy in a slightly different location – just a few centimeters from the original. They closed the original location and created a new stoma because of the way the loop was brought out of the. However, please discuss this with your surgeon, as everyone’s anatomy and surgical plan can be different.

I’m sorry you’re going through all this. From what I’ve heard, surgeons often make a new site for the loop ileostomy, but sometimes they can use the same one depending on how it’s healing. Your surgeon should be able to tell you what’s best in your case. Wishing you a smooth surgery and recovery!

The loop ileostomy itself is a bit different structurally — it’s a loop of bowel rather than an end, so it might look and behave differently. But if your current site is healthy, chances are good they’ll use it again.

Thank you for posting your question. Whether your new loop ileostomy will be in the exact same location as your current end ileostomy depends on several factors. In some cases, the surgeon may be able to use the same site for the loop ileostomy. In other situations, they may need to close the current stoma and create a new opening in a different spot on your abdomen. This decision is highly individualized and should be discussed with your surgical team, as they are best positioned to explain what will happen in your specific case.
