My 11-year-old son was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis two weeks ago. He is on prednisone but will be switching to a new medication soon.
He has been laying on the couch for the past week because his belly hurts when he gets up.
My question is, should I encourage him to get up and play and ride his bike? Or should I let him rest as much as he would like? When you have ulcerative colitis, do you have to push through the pain to exercise or do you let your body rest until the pain stops?

A few months ago, I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and I have dealt with stomach pain also. I would encourage plenty of rest for him to have more energy or until he feels much better. In my experience, I had to be patient with myself because I was tired sometimes. But I began walking a few steps each day for exercise. Now I am able to do yoga every week.

Thank you so much for the reply. I’ll let him know that exercising will help him feel better. Hopefully that will encourage him.

Hi, Sorry to hear about your son. I was diagnosed around the same age myself. Everyone has diffrent symptoms but he must try and live a normal active life. He will have difficult times and it is life changing. But like me and many others he will adapt and live a normal life with supportive family. Exercise helps your mood and helps to reduce symptoms. When he is ready i would say try and get him to go out otherwise he wont. Make sure he gets the right treatment and so he gets into remission.
Good luck he aint alone :)
