Coping with aftereffects of antibiotics -- advice? Probiotic or other recommendations

Tue, July 02, 2013 6:34 PM

Hi,
I have had three surgeries for Crohn's and am missing several feet of my small intestine, so things do go through me a bit fast and my bowells are never normal, but things have gotten really terrible since I was on three different courses of antibiotics: cipro (for a UTI) and when the UTI recurred, macrobid, and then when I had a bad strep C infection in my throat, ten days of augmentin. Since then I have had terrible, gassy, explosive, diarrhea sometimes ten times a day. I know I'm not having a Crohn's recurrence, because I feel fine otherwise and don't have aches/fever/pain. My doctor, when this first happened, told me to just take more lomotil. To slow my system/control my diarrhea from the aftereffects of surgery, I take three lomotil ea morning and a codeine sulfate (30 mg) at night. I did up the lomotil a bit, but the help is minimal, plus I don't want to treat the symptoms only. I want to have the bacteria in my gut rebalanced again. Should I take a particular probiotic? Anything. All help or similar experiences w/ antibiotics and diarrhea would be appreciated.

If you see this twice, I'm posting on another board, too.

Thanks.
