My son had Crohn's from birth.  He was not diagnosed with Crohn's till he was 11 years old, and during the intervening years, he developed a phobia of eating.  Our pediatric G-I said he has seen this in other children, as well.  My son is now 17, and he still has the eating phobia of most, but not all, foods.  Just wanted to let you know that this can happen to children with Crohn's Disease.

My son is 4 years old and recently diagnosed with Crohn's  This advice is helpful to me thanks.   I can't begin to explain how much my heart hurts  everytime he says my tummy hurts or I give him yet another dose of medicine... I am constantly looking at info online, in books but I feel nothing can be a substitue for talking to someone experiencing the same thing. Or for my son to meet another child who has "tummy problems" .  I think it would be helpful out there to meet/chat with someione who has a preschool age child with IBD>   Anyone out there???

Thanks!

Great advice from shining star.  My daughter 15yrs old was diagnosed with crohn's 8 months ago and the most help that i got was talking to a woman who's son was diagnosed when he was 2 and is now 8.  I don't know what state you live in but many children's hospitals have cd's that they make to help parents of kids with ibd's-- tell them to hunt one down- it will help them. Many hospitals also have IBD days for children and parents-- fun for the kids and informative for the parents.I found out what was going on in my area rights here on the CCFA site. The stuffed animal idea is a great one-- all little ones need a friend to keep them company with all the tests and big kid talk.  But the best advice is to tell them to try to keep things "ok" for the child.  They feed off of our emotions.  Tell them to read, read, read-- i just picked up more pamphlets at our Take Steps walk- one was written like a comic book-- too young for my girl but it will help explain it better to the other little one's in our family. Meeting people with crohn's has been the most helpful for myself and my daughter. They need to talk to you and any others that they can- it is nice to know that you are not alone--- i am amazed at the number of conversations that I have had on the phone with people that I have never met-- i feel blessed that so many are willing to reach out to help strangers.

Hello,

I have had Crohns since I was 10years old,  and I am now 43years,  Let the parents know that they need to be as informed as possible, and not to shelter her too much,  she will need to be a little girl, even though they will want to protect her from everything, like not going to sleep overs stuff like that,  make sure they are honest with her friends parents and don't be ashamed of letting people know that she needs to be on a special diet.  I am not sure what state you live in but find the best Pediatric Gastro they can,  in Illinois the University of Chicago has the Top Pediatric team for Crohns Disease,  I was with them until I was nineteen years old.  them moved to the adult team.  As a child my self with Crohns I felt as if my doctors and my parents were being mean to me by not letting me eat what I wanted and making take medications.  and also the hospital visits.  Let them know to be very open with her about her disease and that she can do what ever she chooses, and that it may limit some of the things she can do but not all.  I was given a small stuffed dog when I was ten and his name is snuggles she can take him anywhere in the hospital and in procedure rooms and to the doctor, I still take mine with me to both.  I hope I have helped you out a little bit.  Good luck and God Bless you,
