New Symptoms...any help?

Thu, June 19, 2008 1:26 PM

I have had Crohn's for about 8 years, but I consider myself to have a mild case of it...which I feel really lucky about.  I have never had surgery, been admitted to the hospital, or been on prednisone for longer then a month.  This being said I deal with nausea, fatigue, stomach aches, fistulas...the usual.  I'm sure you all know.  Lately though I have been having really horrible pain before I have to, well, poop (I feel like I can say this on this website).  I am not sure if I have a mild blockage or what but it feels like someone is grabbing my intestine and twisting.  My uneducated opinion thinks it feels like air pushing through my intestines because the pain comes and goes.  Like it will be horrible for about a minute than it will subside for five, then come back again until I finally can go to the restroom...however that happens when it wants to and no amount of pushing makes it come any faster.  I'm sure this is typical, but although I've experience this before now it's happening a few times a week instead of a few times a year.  Any consolations?  Anyone had this feeling as well?  Is there anything you can do to help it?  Or should I just give in and go see my GI doctor?  Thank you for any advice.

Thanks so much for the response.  I actually did go to the doctor yesterday and since I really only had those symptoms lately (besides the everyday stomach aches, nausea, etc).  He just placed me on a probiotic, gave me a blood test and then as soon as we get the blood test back I will get some sort of CT/bowel series combination.  I hate these because I HATE (as I'm sure everyone does) barium or any liquid to that effect.  After having Crohns for a while it takes a lot of pain to make me cry, but barium really does it to me.  Anyway, I hope he sees what the problem is.

Thank you for your advice and I went on to your blog I'll be sure to keep up with it.  Good luck with your pregnancy.  Although I'm not there myself quite yet it is something I worry about the copmlications with Crohns and pregnancy altogether.  I have a blog too, but it's mostly about stupid things I think are funny.  It has nothing to do with Crohns, but if you're bored check it out.   animalslovesnacks.blogspot.com

Thank you again and keep in touch. :)

I hate to say it, but you'll probably have to see the doctor.  It could be as simple as a bad case of gas or something far more complicated like an obstruction.

Any time I've called my doctor, he's asked me if there was bleeding.  Usually, if the pain isn't excruciating and there's no blood, a quick office visit for new meds is required.  Or, they may want a colonoscopy or a upper/lower GI series depending on when the last time they saw your insides was.  It's worth it if you're really in pain and need some relief.

I've finally found a great doctor that I can trust and even call whenever I need him.  Anyone with Crohn's should keep looking for this type of relationship if they don't like who they're currently seeing.  Issues can get out of hand very quickly with this disease... I could tell you some pretty crazy stories of slight discomfort turning out to be major events!

Thank you so much for the reply!  You'll have to let me know how it turns out.  I know I probably just need to see my doctor, but I avoid him like the plague because I hate them.  I am being a wimp I know.  Thank you again for your help though.

Good afternoon,

Well I have that problem sometimes,  only I have to go so bad and get the pain and it feels like something inside is going to pop, my doctor has increased my 6mp and pentasa and added prednisone, things are not so painful anymore, but the problem is not fixed.  He thinks that I either have a blockage or a stricture.  We are going to give it another month to see what happens, if things don't get better we will do a catscan to see which one it is.  I would go see your GI doctor you don't want to get into any type of emergency.  Let us know how you are doing. good luck.
