Anyone tried probiotic (Align) pills?

Tue, July 01, 2008 9:42 AM

I just went to the doctor yesterday after having some bad gas or air something painfully moving through my intestines.  I have Crohns and in the past have been on the list of drugs...pentasa, prednisone, prevacid, the usual.  I am stubborn and I took myself off all of my drugs a few years and I have been doing fine.  I luckily have a great GI in New York that specializes in Crohns patients specifically.  Since he knows I hate medicine and my Crohns doesn't seem horrible he placed me on Align, a probiotic drug, to see if that helped without placing me on heavier stuff that might not help.  I just wondered if anyone else had tried this and if if worked for them at all?  Does it help with stomach aches and nausea (my two biggest Crohns issues)?  Let me know what you think...

Thanks,

Julie

Carla,

Thanks so much for the advice!  Do you refrigerate the pill form as well?  I will start doing that.

Thanks!

Even if this Align fails, I suggest not giving up on probiotics. There's proven goodness to them; it's all in finding a true source. Research the different cultures and what each does, find a good multi-probiotic that ensures attachment to the flora all the way through the digestive tract, including the large intestine. Keep in mind that it's legal for probiotic companies to state "10,000 live & active cultures" and leave out the fact that as 10,000 is the number within the capsule (or drink, etc...) at the time of manufacture... many of those cultures may be dead by the time of purchase.

I keep my probiotics refrigerated even if it isn't required, as it increases shelf life regardless of requirement. A good multi-digestive-enzyme isn't a bad contribution, either. If you think about it... $30.00 in pills for a month is about $1.00 a day... it's a very small effort to make on our parts for the natural benefit granted to our immune systems, especially compared to the amount of money we spend on food monthly, and food should be just like medicine. I try to keep that in mind when health is involved.

Good luck.

Sincerely,

Julie,

I have a friend who has IBS and was suggested to take Align.  She hasn't got any result from it but I went and read about it and understand it may take several weeks to see result.  Depending on the indiviuals circumtances.  Personally I had my husband on a probiotic years ago (from Garden of Life) for several months and hundreds of dollars later.  He never got very good results from it but it also could be because of a different strain of bacteria.  The Align seems to be a popular right now and would be interested to know how it works for people also.
