Stomach Friendly Coffee Options

Tue, July 01, 2008 11:06 AM

Hey everyone,

I know coffee is something I should avoid...but I am studying for the BAR exam and I would not have made even through law school without coffee. Sometimes I have no reaction to it..sometimes I have to run right to the bathroom. I know coffee bothers people of ordinary sensibilities, so I expect it to bother me, someone with UC.

Anybody trying alternatives to "coffee"..a/k/a Soy cappuccinos, lattes, certain types of coffee that are easier on the stomach?

It stinks b/c I can never have coffee when I'm on a road trip or even the day of Exams, but I do not want to get into a Red Bull a-day habit. Just looking for some advice..thanks!

Yerbe Matte is actually naturally nutritious & with less of a caffeine jolt than coffee so if necessary you could drink more of it & hopefully have less GI symptoms. It can be found at a health food store or ordered online, and you can brew it with a coffee machine. Though I suggest making sure the coffee taste has left your brewer first.

Also... the heat of the coffee alone may make you poo. Hot water was consumed in the old days to relieve constipation.

Though I hear ice-cold beverages may not be the best on your intestinal flora, either. I personally try to stick to lukewarm herbal teas.

Ever try green tea? It's very good with lemon and dark liquid stevia, and so good for you. I'm sure you know the research about longevity & antioxidants & weight control & whatnot.

Good luck on the BAR.

Sincerely,

Hi there,

I feel for you.  I just finished my dissertation while experiencing multiple UC flares.  The thing is, I had to have the coffee. I gave up just about everything else but I drank coffee in the afternoon just to keep me going. It was not pleasant and I don't recommend it but I guess we do what we have to do. I don't have any good advice but I find mornings are my worst time. Therefore I reluctantly chose herbal tea over coffee in the morning. I think it helped mildly.

Best of luck on the BAR and good for you for hanging in there!
