Depression

Mon, November 28, 2016 3:16 AM

Anyone battling depression over dreams they always thought they could do but now can't? I've always wanted kids. I can't now because of first infertility and later because I think it's better to not foster/adopt because I won't be able to give kids all the attention they need due to fatigue and sickness.

I am 100% with you.
I didn't know infertility was common with people with IBD....so that really startling.
Even though I'm not currently trying to become pregnant, I constantly worry about the fact that I'm afraid I will pass this awful disease to a child and that would ruin me more than this disease has done to me. I also always wonder about whether a significant other will or would ever want to have kids with me because of the chance that they end up like I have.

I know they tell us we can live a normal life, but it's alot harder than I expected.

Just know you're not alone and you are loved.

Just know that every person is different. Perhaps you won't have issues conceiving. All I know is my doc said Crohn's patients can have more trouble getting pregnant. Best scenario is to have your disease in remission for 6 months to a year before trying to conceive. If you try to conceive and you aren't in remission you will have a complicated pregnancy. I suggest talking with your GI and a consult with your OB before conception. Again, don't worry. Just spend time now wrapping your head around your diagnosis and finding the treatment plan for you!

Thank you for this post. I am newly diagnosed and still trying to figure "life" out. Infertility as a result of IBD is news to me. I have not yet tried to become pregnant, but I am now more worried than I initially was about trying. I recently started concerning myself with the idea of becoming pregnant while having this disease (because of the strict diet... and often times I do not want to eat at all).

Sorry you are struggling so much. I too struggled with intertility (which many people with IBD do). We are now moving to foster to adopt. I had those same concerns. A friend of a friend knew someone also with Crohn's who was doing foster to adopt. This person gave me insight that was good food for thought in making our decision to move forward. Her thoughts that stuck out to me the most was knowing that if otherwise you are a great match for foster to adopt, these kids need us, even with our limitations. She said to really have a support group of people around you that can help when needed. She also said that the occassional use of popping in a movie for the kids when you need to rest is not a bad idea. She also wondered if we are more prepared than others to parent. This idea comes from the fact that we live daily with this disease yet we have to continually rally ourselves to attend our appointments, go to work, etc. Ultimately only you know your situation and if it's truly doable. She encouraged me to try it and if I find out it's not for me, I've at least helped one child.
