juicing

Sun, July 13, 2008 1:55 PM

I have been reading up on all the awesome things juicing fruits and veggies does. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which to buy? I have been reading the pros/cons between centrifugal vs. ma?? (can't remember what the other is called ) Basically, the centrifugal ones are too fast and leave a lot of juice in the pulp and the other moves slowly, leaving the pulp dry. I would love your input!

Thanks,
K

Thanks IBDAuthor!

You know, after all that research, I still havent bought anything for that exact reason-$$. I am afraid to buy the $300 version that takes out the fiber and then it not help anyway. I read that the cheaper juicers don't take as much out as neccessary so then I am in the same boat.

Your response is very encouraging!

Carla gives some great info. on juicing itself, and foods and the IF factor.

Re: juicers - Back in the day (6 years ago) when I first thought of juicing I did the same as you, I researched the 'best' and 'worst' of juicers until my head swam and I nearly gave up on the idea all together.

Instead, go to ebay or amazon or your local costco and buy a decent yet inexpensive juicer simply to see a.) how does your gut react to fresh juice; b.) will you actually juice on a daily/weekly basis; and, c.) what do you like/dislike about the juicer.

I still have and am using that first juicer I bought on ebay for $30. My gut likes juicing okay, it doesn't love it, though, if I drink juice more than a couple of times of week. And, you have to be dedicated to buying fresh produce, cleaning and prepping, and then cleaning up the juicer. Honestly, all a little time consuming, BUT if fresh juice makes your tum happy then you will find it worth it and stick to it. Or, if it doesn't make your tum happy, or you won't stick with it then at least you didn't spend $100+ on a contraption that'll get relegated to the back of the upper kitchen cabinet.

Good luck!

That's a great question. I also read about the fiber thing and can't seem to find any straight answers. I would love to have a recommendation for a good juicer!

I have read and tried so many diets for my crohns.  No fiber, high fiber, fruits, no fruits, etc.  I'd like to try juicing, do you have a recipe book you can recommend and a juicer?

Hey... I've been juicing for awhile and I love it to death. Right now it's what I'm living off of, along with yogurt. My advice is that vegetable juices are more nourishing than fruit juices. Many fruit juices, though tasty and nutritionally beneficial, raise your blood glucose levels at a rapid amout and then lower them quickly, making you feel crashed & ravenous more often. It's not the greatest thing for the equilibrium. It's also no reason to cut fruits out of your diet completely... though it should be known that kindergardeners in schools nationwide are now being limited to 6 oz. of fruit juice a day to prevent childhood obesity.

I don't make the rules, lol... I love fruits the most.

Ok. Anyway, more on juicing... I find that no-matter what I juice, I can take the pulp and re-juice the pulp. It requires me not being lazy, and a little extra time, but I often do it several times over with one product, and I have a relatively up-to-date juicer.

Most importantly... understand systemic inflammation, it's causes, and what it causes. This is an *inflammatory bowel disease. Pain caused by... excess inflammation. Understand food is now our medicine, much as it is so with diabetics. Research the IF -- the Inflammation Factor... know your IF ratings of foods, and be proud of yourself for taking your health into your own hands.

Um... also... it can be really awesome to make your own nut milks with your juicer, depending on what kind it is and how much money you feel like spending. To be cheap, I use mine to make oat milk, because oats serve a PRE-biotic purpose, and as oatmeal is possibly effective way down into the large intestine. Whether or not oat milk serves the same purpose, I have yet to discover, but it's tasty regardless.

Good luck and much love,

=Carla
