remission and daily meds

Is this normal?
Over the past 25 years I have had 2 rounds of remission. Both lasted over 7 years! Both times I was on NO MEDS! The remission lasted over 7 years both times. In the past 5 years I have had at least 6-7 flare ups! And, for the most part I was on meds! What is the deal? Do the meds somehow tell my body I have UC? After this flare up (yes, I am currently having issues) do I try med free again?

I know just how you feel.  I have not had UC as long, but have gone through two long periods of remission.  I also had small flare ups before I was diagnosed.  Then a little steroid made it go away and I spent 4-5 years with no meds at all.  It's tempting to do that again, but it just shows how much we don't yet understand about the immune system.  Meds can stop the hideous flare ups and that's not happening to me again.  I take the meds and I know it's worked more than once.  It's just a matter of the right med at the right time.  So hang in there and fight back!!

Inflammatory bowel disease is tricky. I was diagnosed with crohn's at the age of 10, and after a colonoscopy, they put me on prednisone, and within a couple of months, I was in remission and felt back to 100%. After the prednisone, they put me on pentasa, and I was in remission for six years. During my period of remission, I tried asking my doctor several times to take me off the pentasa, because it felt as if I would never have a flare again. I was wrong. About a couple of months ago, I began to flare up again, and I cannot figure out why. They put me on prednisone again, and my flare is finally going away again, which I am thankful for. I guess what my point is that flares can occur at any time, however there are things that can trigger a flare such as diet change. Did you make any changes in your diet? If so, that could possibly be a cause of your flares. Do you have a lot of stress in your life? Stress is a key main cause that fuels flare ups. As far as medications go, it is always best to talk to your doctor about what medications are best to treat your flare ups. Best of luck and I hope this helps!
