Playing sports

Mon, August 18, 2008 9:16 AM

Hi. New here. Diagnosed with mild colitis earlier this year and am taking Asacol...seemingly a million pills a day!

I like to play sports, but often run into problems...especially in softball. How do you all manage to play sports/be active? Any tips/tricks?

Thanks,

Scott

I have been very discouraged. I was diagnosed about one year ago and still have not found the right balance of maintenance drugs to sustain me. I have been training for a 1/2 ironman and am currently in a flare up!! It is 4 weeks till my race and I have stopped running all together. I am still swimming and biking neither of which cause me a problem. But, the second I start running (when i am in a flare) I have got to find a bathroom! VERY FRUSTRATED! I know my health is more important but I want to still be able to do the things I love. I know there will be another race and GOD willing I will be able to do that one. But, It still doesn't change the fact that I am MAD and want some relief. I really have found comfort in reading your messages and feel like I am not alone! Thanks.

I too am a runner and have UC. I don't know if it's good advice or not but I know before a marathon or half marathon I take Immodium immeditely following my first bowel movement. The box says take two but I only need one and I no longer have the sudden urges to go (which is nice when you are out running for 4+ hours).

But I only do this for races as I cannot be sure there will be a bathroom near by. During training runs I just make sure that I use the bathroom before I head out the door and I'll plan my runs around locations where I could use the bathroom if I had to.

I am a runner and I have to stop from time to time for a potty break.  I just go into a store or if I'm running in a park into their restroom areas.  It isn't perfect, but it's the only thing I know to do.  I don't want to give up running.  Sometime I feel like I have to go to the bathroom more when I run.  DOn't know if that is true.

Thx, Anita

Thanks for replying...

Yeah, I try to do all those things, too. I play softball, primarily, so I can totally related to what you said. Definitely better to run to the toilet than crap my pants. Embarassing either way, just less so running to the pot.

Anyone else got any advice?

hi, I'm dealing with this same issue right now.

I make sure there's a bathroom where the I'm playing the sport.  I make sure I goto bathroom right before starting the sport.  If I feel the urge to go, no matter how slight, I'll go at my first convenience whether I feel the urge at that point in time or not.  Of course, if it's urgent I go right away.  I can see where this could get tough with organized team sports, but I'd be more embarassed to crap my pants than tell everybody I've got a medical condition, and when I've got to go, there's no putting it off.

anybody else have any ideas?
