Crohn's and Classes

Thu, October 09, 2008 2:29 PM

My wife has been having trouble with a teacher of hers recently, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions that have worked for them.  Or a similar story.

The schools attendance policy is simple, no more than three UNEXCUSED absences.  Simple, shes got an excuse, Crohns.  Two teachers understood, no problem.  The third has his own attendance policy, no more than three absences, period.  Tardies count as absences, as well.  Great for Crohns... or anyone with any disability for that matter.

He was informed that we have a disagreement with his policy and that it wouldnt work for her.  His response, "Dont be late again." and "maybe school isn't for you."

They have disability offices at school, who are filing an accommodation recommendation"  that he can follow at his discretion.  Well, he hasnt.  Weve filed paperwork with the Department of Educations Office of Civil Rights, who are getting a lawyer together to come after this guy and force him to accommodate.  They were fast to get to us, and said we have a case, but theyve been slow to act.

Were worried he may drop her before action can be taken, as hes suggested he may do so.

Anyone else ever hear of an accommodation recommendation?  Thats like saying, "Hey, you, I recommend you follow the law, dont break it."  Total garbage.

My wife's crohn's isn't the worst in the world, and she can manage class with accommodation... this isn't a question.  And while this may be the third time I've had to set a teacher straight, the other two caved and I just can't believe I've had to take it this far.

i had a few teachers that were very accomodating without going to disability services. but there was one similar to the *** in your wife's situation. he had the same policy, i explained the situation along with my form from disability services. he refused to work with me. luckily it was my senior year and i wasn't a required course so i simply dropped the class rather than deal with the stress of such a policy, which would probably have made my crohn's worse. hopefully this works out in your favor.

i can't believe that teacher is such a *** about it. i told my teachers right away and have missed many classes but they have all been very nice and accommodating.  the only help i can offer you is registering with disability services if her school has them.  teachers are supposed to want their students to succeed.  but if he's being a *** then register with your ds if you have one.  they require a letter from your doctor and then send out a general letter to all your teachers and specifically to ones that are a problem so they'll work with you to get the most out of classes.
