Can't afford Asacol for two Crohns patients

Sat, October 11, 2008 10:04 AM

My son has just been diagnosed with Crohns.  I also have it and a son with UC.  The prescription cost , even with some insurance help, is staggering.  I don't know how we will be able to pay for a month's worth.Does anyone know of a way to get discounted Asacol?  Are there any prescription help

Try this website: www.rxassist.org    It is a patient assistance program and Asacol is listed.  I just received 3 months of Asacol , which for me was a savings of $1500.  There is no way I could afford this drug without this program.

Hi, I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease 11 or 12 years ago.  Right now I don't have any medical insurance at all.  I get alot of my medicine from patient assistance programs. You can ask your doctor about the different programs and he should be able to help you.  I personnally do the reasearch and paper work myself because its alot quicker.  A good website to check is www.pparx.org . I went to that web site to check to make sure Asacol was listed and it is.  You may be able to get assistance for both you and your son. There is usually an application for you and your docor to fill out. With your application you will need to send in income verification and a prescription from your doctor.  Good luck and please let me know if I was of any help.

Before I got married (I'm on my husband's insurance now), I was having a similar problem.  Asacol can be very expensive.

My husband looked into buying online from Canada, and we found some really good prices.  Asacol has a genaric form (plain old Mesalamine) there.

Buying online, you can get a six month supply (or more), that gets the price down even further.  Just be careful.  Occasionally there are shady websites out there.

Also, I found out (too late) that my insurance DID cover Asacol, but I had to go to a "Participating Pharmacy."

Thanks.  I went to the Asacol website and found the $25 coupon.  I didn't know that it could be used with insurance.  I hope Medco lets me use it.

I'll also ask our doctor for samples.  Together this should help alot.

Hi,
Well there is a couple of ways.
- Ask your Dr. for samples drug reps always supply the offices with sample drugs so definetly ask if they have any in stock and let them know your situation. I always get samples to hold me over to pay day.
- Go to the asacol web site they have coupons for 25 dollars off and if you contact them they may be able to provide you with some samples.
-I just went to a Chrons and Colitits seminar today and the asacol rep gave me a card for 25 dollars off a 30 day supply up to June and she said that most Dr's offices should have them. Then in June I could renew my card. This works even if you have insurance.

I know what you are going through I had to pay out of pocket for 6 months its not easy.
Take care
