Life insurance

Mon, November 10, 2008 1:51 PM

I have been living with Crohn's reasonably well for many years.  I was diagnosed back in '92, and knock on wood have not had any surgeries.  I recently applied for term life insurance, and told them going in that I have Crohn's.  They said OK, but after taking the physical and three months of waiting I was denied.  I will admit that I was doing a short course of prednisone at the time (apparently poor timing on my part).  Has anyone had luck getting life insurance?  Is there a secret?

I only have mild ulcerative colitis (lower colon affected) with intermittent flare-ups and I still was unable to be approved for a supplementary policy through my work!

I won't even bother trying for another.  Lucky for me, I have a small automatic policy through work and had another from my pre-diagnosis days.....

Good luck!

I applied for life insurance a couple of years ago.  When I talked to the agent, I told him up front about my Crohn's and he gave me a pretty reasonable quote.  Well, after a month or so, he came back and told me that the quote had to be modified and the new price was a little over double the original price.  I was so upset.  I know that crohn's is a nasty disease and can make people very sick, but does it really warrant a double fee for life insurance?  Most people will not die from their illness as long as it is treated properly.

Luckily my husbands work started offering life insurance for spouses and we did not have to qualify, we could just sign up and it had amazing prices.  It is not as much life insurance as I would like but some is better than none I guess.  Good luck with your hunt for insurance, I know what an uphill battle it can be!

I think you just have to find the right company.  I have Crohns and am on buckets of meds, etc.  I was able to get life insurance relatively easily.  I can't afford disability insurance, but that's another issue.  I just talked with the agent beforehand and let him know I have this diagnosis and asked him to get me the best deal he could.  Price wasn't even that bad.

Good luck!
