I was put on birth control in 2000, two years before my crohn's diagnosis. I had already had the symptoms of crohn's for several years before the birth control and continued it after the diagnosis. Last year I was diagnosed with insulin resistance and put on a higher dose of bc and metformin. I quit the metformin after 6 months but I continued on the bc and I kept having multiple flare-ups. I was put on the NuvaRing in September and have been sick ever since. Anyone else having problems with bc and their crohn's symptoms?

I don't have Crohn's but I do have ulcerative colitis. I have been on birth control for apx. 10 years. I was diagnosed with colitis December of 2005. My husband and I decided to try to have children and so I came off birth control. Ever since then (3 months) after I ovulate I have bloating, abdominal cramps, watery diarhea, blood and mucus. As soon as I start my period my symptoms start to subside. Once I ovulate the next month everything starts over. My gastro. agrees that it is hormones. I called my obgyn last week and the nurse called me back to say that my doctor didn't think it was hormones. I totally disagree because I have always had an upset stomach the week of my period even before I was diagnosed with uc. But...I'm not a doctor so what do I know... Has anyone had problems/complications getting pregnant with uc or crohn's?

bear with me... i haven't been diagnosed with crohn's disease yet but i expect to be once all the testing is completed. i've been doing a lot of research and reading a lot of blogs and i am seeing more and more frequently that many of the things i've experienced during my cycle that only started in the last year are things that are associated with crohn's - diarrhea, horible cramps in my abdomen - and that other problems i've had are also symptoms. why reply to this entry? i was put on birth control less than a month ago, to deal with problems i assumed were associated with my cycle, and immediately began to experience many primary symptoms of crohn's including constant diarrhea, loss of appetite, fever, night sweats, abnormal cramping, and massive weight loss. by massive i mean over 30 pounds (>20% of my total weight and about 8% body fat) in the first two weeks. and it all happened right after the intruduction of birth control. before that, i thought maybe i needed more fiber or i was just irritated more than i used to be by fatty foods. now i feel like i am in *** .

i've been on birth control since before i was diagnosed with crohn's, and i've never had issues with them.
i recently was switched to seasonique because my crohn's flared so badly whenever i got my period every month that my doctor&i decided the less i got it, the better i ought to feel; so far so good!

i have been on orthotricyclen for at least 18 yrs. i have had crohn's disease (well have been diagnosed for 10 years) and this birth control has been the best out of all i have tried. i always for some reason have always had really bad flare-ups the week before and during my period because everything is going crazy at that time. i would get off the ring if it bothers you that much and talk with your dr the dr should be able to find the right birth control for you considering there is so many out there.

i have been on bc since before i was diagnosed with crohns, and have been on it continuously. i haven't seemed to have a problem specifically with the bc pills, but then again, my CD isn't in remission either. my doc seems to not feel any of it has to do with my bc...then again, i am on pills, and not on nuvaring
