bathroom issues

Tue, January 20, 2009 2:55 PM

I was disgnosed with Crohn's about 4 or 5 years ago.  I have been very blessed as I do not have the awful symptoms that I am reading about here.  However, over about the last few months, I have not had as much control and sometimes almost no control over my bowels.  I have had to change my underwear and clothes because I had soiled them and I did not even realize it until I went to the bathroom.  Also almost every time I go to the bathroom and I just need to urinate, I have a bowel movement which I can't control.  Are there others who have these issues?  I take Pentasa  4000 mg every day.  I am wondering if I need a medicine or what is wrong?  I am wondering if others have this problem and what they do.  Please reply.

After my Crohns surgery in 1995, the doctors told me that I would have less control over my bowels because the iliocecal valve had been removed along with the terminal ileum.  MY GI doctor prescribed daily intake of colestipol, which is normally prescribed for high cholesterol conditions.  It is also used to help control diarrhea in GI patients.  That, along with a daily dose of loperamide (Imodium) seems to work for me.  Of course, I also have to watch what I eat, but by and large I seem to be able to tolerate a fairly normal diet.

I still have 2-3 bowel movements a day and have to plan my activities accordingly.  I hope your visit with your doctor is productive, and you get a measure of control back.

I have ulsertive proctitice (colitis) for about 9 years now and I have experieced something simular where I will go to the bathroom to urinate and liquid or a watery BM will come along, and I didn't even know I had to go.  I have also expierenced soiling in the pants without even realizing that it has happened. Although that has been sporatic and thankfully only at home. but mostly it has been mucus when it does happen.  I have not changed my meds to help with this, infact at the time I was not taking meds.

Not that this is any help, but you are not alone.

I appreciate your response and did not take it as a rude response.  You said you were on Humira.  Isn't that a pretty strong medicine?  Did you take others first?  From my reading on this disease, it seems like that is a line of defense after numerous other drugs.  Am I wrong?  BTW, I do have an appt with my GI tomorrow (Tues 01-27). Please reply again.

I also have Croh's and  have had the same problem in the past.I agree that you could probably use a change in meds but in the meantime my doctor tells me to use an anti-diarrheal such as Amodium or a store brand of the same.It seems to help the urgentsy to go.Give it a try. It can't hurt.Good luck.

not trying to be rude, but if you are soiling yourself, there is a big problem. that is a terrible symptom of crohn's that i experienced too, for far too long. your meds need to be changed...please go see your doctor. this is not normal.

now that i am on humira, i don't experience this terrible symptom of crohn's any longer--in fact, i only go to the bathroom about 2-3 times per day, and it's always solid stool. this is normal....having diarrhea, soiling yourslef and using the bathroom so often is not.

go see your doc so s/he can help you! your meds need to be changed!

best of luck!
