Sun, February 01, 2009 11:38 PM

My 12 year old was just diagnosed with Crohns and I was looking for Pros and cons on the SDC diet. Please let me know any experience you or your loved ones have had with the diet.. I have a friend of someone in my family that has been symptom free for 4 years..

I've been on the SCD diet for about a year now.  I  follow it very strictly, sticking to the guidelines 100%.  Of course I have had my slip ups here and there; as I'm only human.

During the past year, I've had a few bad flare ups.  Overall, I believe the diet does help me.  I've been able to stop taking Asacol and 6mp with the help of the diet and have been med and flare free for two months.  My hope is to stay off my meds and continue to control my symptoms with the diet.  Not only has the SCD diet helped me with my Ulcerative Collitis, but it is a clean, and healthy way to live.

Feel free to let me know if anyone has any SCD specific questions, as I've become an expert over the past year.  Also, anyone who is considering the diet should purchase and read Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall (http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/).  She is founder and expert of the diet.

Best of luck.

I did it for 1 1/2 years and felt great on it...it got me through my last pregnancy with ease.  Then 3 weeks after my youngest was born and I was still on the diet I got the sickest I have EVER been.  All my doc's say it was hormone changes but I will admit I was discouraged.  I NEVER cheated...did everything 100% and was sure it was going to cure me.  But..really I did feel good on it.  I just can't convince myself to go back on it.

Hi- I just began part of the SCD--I say part because I don't follow the diet 100% quite yet. However, I lowered my carbs as outlined in the Breaking the Viscous cycle book, stay away from sugars ( use honey instead), and now make the homemade yogurt that is in the book and on the website. I love the yogurt and it has probiotics which load the intestines with good bacteria and no lactose. It is not an easy diet to follow but there are folks who have experienced very good results. I think growing children probably need a bit more carbs than the diet allows, but the diet is sound and healthy. I suggest trying the yogurt (drizzled with a bit of honey) and see how he tolerates it.

I no longer experience gas problems, bloating or stomach cramps.
I borrowed the book from the library--
hope this helps.

Please go through archived topics on this site--the SCD is discussed fairly regularly.  There is a great site with many good recipes and info. called:  www.nomorecrohns.com .  The CCFA also has a good article on this subject.  We tried it in our household--I did it along with my son, who was diagnosed with Crohn's one year ago at age 18.  We did it for almost three months. I think he did well on the diet--but he also had pred. in his system at the same time.  He thinks his bm's were more frequent and gritty..plus, he could not really do the diet while eating college food, as he is this year.  I felt GREAT on the diet-lost wt (am already thin).  I spent all of my time cooking and washing up from cooking.  I was obsessed and bought several good goodbooks (check out Amazon--reading the reviews is helpful).  Ultimately, I gave it up--was uncomfortable eating so much meat and nuts and fruit and no carbs...it is nutritionally sound and does not hurt to try though.
