Breastfeeding and Asacol?

Sat, February 07, 2009 5:54 PM

Hi!

I just had my baby 5 weeks ago and I havent been taking any meds.  I am starting to get sicker everyday.  I was wondering if anyone has taken Asacol when breastfeeding...or any advice...thanks!!!

I recently checked out 2 books about UC/Crohns. I know that in one of these books they had a very good list of which medications are ok to be on during prenancy and/or breastfeeding.

If memory serves I believe Asacol is ok (I'm on the same med. so that one stuck out to me) I am about 80% sure that the info was in the 100? book listed below, but in the event it was in the other book, I listed both. Both are excellent reads if your interested, otherwise a quick visit to the bookstore/library should give you a firm answer.

Okay I just did some research and I was wrong about that.  It is present in breast milk, but I would still urge you to talk further with your dr. (OB and GI) about the possible consequences/side effects.

Hi
I breastfed my daughter while on Asacol with no problems.  As I understand it, since it is not released in the bloodstream but rather in the sm. intestine, it is not present in breast milk.  I would urge you to talk to your dr. and a lactation consultant.  Good luck, and hopefully you are feeling well again soon.  You probably don't have much time for sickness right now!
