6mp question...

Mon, March 02, 2009 1:00 AM

I was told by my doctor that I should avoid drinking while on 6mp, and I'm guessing this is because both 6mp and alcohol metabolize in the liver.  This being said, how bad is it to drink two or three times a year?  I never drink casually, and when I do drink, I have about 5-6 beers (I steer clear of hard alcohol).  While I want to listen to my doctor who obviously knows a lot more than me, I highly doubt that a couple of nights of drinking each year will do permanent damage to my liver...Its not like I'm drinking every weekend (this is a RARE thing).  Can someone please shed light on this? I would like to get this figured out before I go off to college.

You're on the right track about how alcohol and 6MP metabolise.  I was told that drinking any kind of alcohol while I was in 6MP would make my guts hurt so badly that I might think I need to go to the emergency room.

I would suggest talking frankly about it with your doctor before taking a chance.

Hi there,

I have been on 6mp for about 2-3 years and my doctor has never told me not to drink.  She tells me that I shouldn't eat or drink anything that bothers my stomach.  I probably drink about 4-6 times a year.  As long as your doctor is monitoring your liver functions I believe that it is ok to drink when you want too.

Hello!

Im almot 22 years old, and on imuran... i totally understand your idea about wanting to go out with your friends and be social... I drink probablly twice a month but never go over board. My doctor has never told me that i couldn't drink... they said you should never drink close to tkaing your medication, and do it in moderation. I was told that alcohol probablly is not the best for the disease but you have to live. You should be find to go out once in awhile =)
