Resting on Toilet...contraption?

Wed, March 11, 2009 2:46 PM

Hi all...new to forun

My daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's 3 years ago. She was healthy and is now having a flare-up. She spends a considerable amount of time on the toilet. If I am around, I sit with her so she can lean on me and rest. Sometimes she is in there for 30-45 min at a time.

I thought about trying to build something for her to lean against. But my crappy carpenter skills are getting in my way of coming up with an idea how to do this.

Does anyone have something like this? I searched for elderly bathroom products and see handrails for toilets, but nothing like I'm envisioning. I want to be there to comfort her all I can, but think there's no way for me to be there 100% of the time.

Thanks in advance,

Ted

sometimes, but there is a small step stool in the bathroom (for my kids) and I just slide that under my feet to take the pressure off of my legs and change positions for a while

Hi, I am also new to this site. I was diagnosed woth UC 10 years ago. I am also a RN. You just put a thought in my head. Try a bedside table a hospital type one on wheels. I think you can buy one at a hospital supply store, or medical equipment store. I think it would be great. I am having a flare-up now and spend almost 45 minutes in the bathroom at times. I want a TV in there. I will turn on my favorite show only to run to the bathroom 2 minutes into it and come out when the show is over.  I have a magazine rack with all my favorite magazines, books, etc.. ipod touch, whatever it takes to keep my mind off the reason I am in there. I think a rolling bedside table would be great because the pain can double me over at times and I want to lean on something too. You could adjust the table put a pillow or something soft on it and she could rest her arms and head on it for the long bathroom trips.

I completely understand the need for you are talking about. I have had UC for years and often when I venture into the bathroom, my oldest child or husband knocks and asks if I "need the pillow".  They bring me a bed pillow that I place on my lap to rest.  Other times I have used the wall next to the toilet to lean against (it's great in the winter because it's cool to the touch). In our second bath (which is very small) I balance my forehead on the outer edge of the  bathroom door for support.

I am not exactly sure how you'd go about construction, but I think you'd make a fortune if you could bring the product to the mass market. It would have to be collapsible/foldable to some extent, for both space and portability. It might need something to make it adjustable for patients of different sizes and  heights; and of course padding...lots and lots of padding.

I think there are probably people out there with the engineering skills to help construct one of these. Maybe you could start with a local college??? Put a post out for help??? Or you could check for local furniture builders maybe??? I wish you much good luck with your venture. Let me know when you succeed, I might just end up being your first customer.
