rehydration drinks

Fri, March 13, 2009 12:00 AM

Does anyone know a powder-form redhyration drink that is less irritating to the digestive system than gatorade? I usually use pedialyte, but that only comes now in liquids, and it is very heavy to carry.

Funny, but I just posted something myself regarding leg cramps and the need to rehydrate.  I use CeraLyte.  My daughter is a Reg. Dietitian and heard of this at a conference for IBD patients.  It is rice based, no sugar, and loaded with the electrolytes we lose with diarrehea.  Right now you have to buy it on the internet.  It has made the most amazing results for me. As a Reg. Dental Hygienist myself, I don't really like products that contain sugar like Gatorade.  I used Gatorade before I found out about CeraLyte.  No going back to Gatorade for me.  CeraLyte is classified as a medical food.  Better all the way around for you.  It is even used in hospitals via IV for rehydration.  It comes in different flavors and strengths.  Check it out!! Let me know if you have any problems with finding it.

I avoid all the chemical in the sports drinks by drinking bottled water with the electrolytes added. I carry the smaller size with me because too much weight sets off a run to the bathroom. I was told to drink 2.5 to 3 quarts of water a day--www.MizPee.com (in your city) is a good website for that!

I forgot to mention PROPEL. has all the rehydrating nutrients of gatorade but very very easy on the stomach. much like water.

i need to think about the powder question...i had this one powder when i was in Europe, but i don't recall the name.

truth is you probably shouldn't need more than 1 rehydrating drink a day, maybe two max.  if you drink a Propel in the morning followed by a good amount of water, say 2 litres in the course of the day, you shouldn't need to carry around many beverages with you. just make sure you keep drinking, at work, at home, wherever.  you'll need the powders and gatorades in large doses if you have already gotten dehydrated. but the point is to avoid that by continuing to drink.

have you ever considered the Camel?  like the soldiers have. you can carry a larger quantity of water and it's light weight and will fit comfortably in a bag.

ThaFunk made a good point.

I think Gatorade is by far the best. it's delicious and provides you with great sustenance. I wasn't as thrilled with the powders.

but with Gatorade, definitely the Gatorade RAIN versions and G2 are easier on the gut.  i think this is because they have less food coloring.

someone once told me, 'Clear food, Clear gut' and i think this carries a lot of merit.

I forgot to mention that it comes as a powder.  It comes in individual sleeves that you put into a bottle of water or you can buy a canister of it that you can scoop into a glass/bottle.

I think that will be just the ticket!

There is a drink that is called Vitalyte.  It's similar to gatorade, but has much less sugar and therefore easier to handle.  Also, gatorade G2 is very good.  It has very little sugar and tastes better.  You can purchase vitalyte through the internet.  It's not expensive and it tastes good.  I like the orange the best.

oh, as far as a substitute isagenix has powder packets of electrolytes, in lemonlime orange flavors, and not as abrasive as gatorade, i drink them and they are not too *** your stomach, mainly b/c its all natural and theres' less processed ingredients than in gatorade, let alone the corn syrup in gatorade

Also on gatorade, be aware of what flavors you are drinking, i'm post opt from UC and hav a J pouch, i find that lemon lime gatorade is the easiest on my stomach, anytime i have purple or red i tend to have a more active stomach and even a change in color in bowel movements. Orange is also okay with my stomach, but i do know i have to stay away from anything purple even if its kool-aid, and red with gatorade at times as well.

I dont know powder drinks but Id say to try "Smart Water" or "Fiji" water.  They both have electrolytes in them and you can get them at the grocery store.  My friend just had a gastric bypass and the doc said she could only drink those 2 waters.
